What is CETP?

The Certified Employee Training Program (CETP) is a formal structure for training, testing and documentation to assure that workers in the propane industry, nationwide, have the necessary knowledge and skills to perform their work safely and effectively; and adopted as necessary training by the Kansas Fire Marshal.

The CETP was developed by the Education Committee of the National Propane Gas Association with the curriculum written by Dr. Paul Lyons of Industrial Training Service, Murray, Kentucky. Existing resources - NPGA Training Guidebooks and Safety Bulletins, NFPA 54 & 58, manufacturer's information and AGA materials - were evaluated and fit into the curriculum classifications determined to provide training in primary job functions and tasks, and designed to meet the training requirements mandated in NFPA Pamphlet 58, Section 1-6, which states "Qualification of Personnel. In the interest of safety, all persons employed in handling LP-Gases shall be trained in proper handling and operating procedures, which the employer shall document."

Training classifications included in CETP are: Basic Principles & Practices (must be completed first before taking any other classes); Propane Delivery; Plant Operations; Distribution Systems Operations; Appliance Installation; and Appliance Service.

CETP certification offers at least these benefits for your business:

4. Making a statement to the public and your community that you, and your industry, are concerned about their safety.
5. Sending a clear message to legislators and other regulatory officials that training, thus increasing safety, is a top industry priority.
6. Completing the training before your insurance company requires it (if not already) for coverage -- evidence of your company's commitment to safety which could favorably influence your liability rates and exposure.
7. Keep you from receiving a violation when the Fire Marshal checks for training.

Employee Certification

At the conclusion of each training school, Certification Tests are administered by the instructor. The tests are sent to Industrial Training Service for evaluation and are recorded. A Skills Assessment is included with each student's materials and must be taken back to his/her supervisor/manager/employer to verify that individual's ability to perform various hands-on activities related to that job classification for which the training was provided. The completed Skills Assessment must be forwarded to Industrial Training Service within 12 months of passing the test.  Upon passing the Certification Test and returning the completed Skills Assessment within the required time period, the student will receive a Certificate of Completion, a wallet card and a uniform patch.
